5Terrific IBM, I mean Lenovo ThinkCentre
By Arthur C. Cox
I've implemented IBM/Lenovo computers in sets of desktops and ThinkPads for years and have never had any regrets. They are built like tanks and just work and work. The oldest desktop I have (a 2001) is still in daily operation. Sure, I lose a hard drive every few years, but each set has a ClickFree backup, so I don't lose any information. Plugging in a new hard drive and getting back to business only takes a few minutes. I've never lost any of these computers to mortality, although I've had a couple of clones fall by the wayside. I got this new one to replace the oldest because that one won't run Windows 7. So, it will be retired, but I'll still keep it for its archive, it's going to outlive me, anyway. Everybody I know seems to want to experiment with the next big thing, and they have the horror stories to prove it. What I want are no nonsense workhorses, no drama, and no down time. Now, this one takes the cake. It may be more computer than most folks will ever need. Perhaps that sounds familiar, but consider this. In my opinion it's the highest quality and best performer you can get for under a grand. That also means it's the best bang for the buck. Yes, I could have found something for a hundred less, only for it to become landfill in a couple of years. Believe me, I know. Been there done that. Now, look under the hood. It's got Intel's latest, top of the line, eight core processor. That means it's got the power of eight standard single core processors, and running at 3.4 MHz means that it's almost twice as fast as most other computers. Jumbo jets and cruise ships don't have this kind of processing power, yet. If you want to "see" your Windows 7 or 8 computer at work, then go to[...]and put their CPU Meter on your desktop. It's interesting and it's free. The hard drive is enormous and very fast, as well. Four GB of RAM may be enough, if not, that's no big deal because getting more is only pocket change. Okay, so this thing isn't going to win a beauty contest. I can live with that. I can also live with the price, which I found to be 40% less, here, than somewhere else. Heck, the processor, alone, is worth almost $300. And the whole thing cost me less than a 4G iPad Mini, which is a lovely little toy, but just a toy, by comparison. Yes, it cost more than a Brand X, but the productivity increase will probably amount to about 30 minutes every day. In dollars and cents that amounts to about a hundred bucks a day. So, it will pay for itself in less than two weeks and probably remain in service for 8-10 years. As they say, do the math. Try as you might, your not going to beat this thing at its own game.
